Faron Young had a long career, beginning with Hank Williams style recordings in the early 1950s. Among his finest recordings are his country boogie songs from the mid 1950s, including Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young, I've Got Five Dollars And It's Saturday Night, and I'm Gonna Live Some Before I Die - all included here on this compilation of his best uptempo recordings.Here are his superb mid 1950s Country Boogie recordings, his Rockabilly recordings from the late '50s, and some great country shuffles from the late '50s and early '60s.The emphasis is on the faster, rockin' and harder edged songs - so if you want a Faron Young collection that omits the Country weepers and gets right down to Honky Tonkin', then this is the one for you!

During his brief career, Johnny Horton was a singer of exceptional range, knocking out great sides no matter whether they were honky tonk, rockabilly, traditional country, boogie, country-pop or, as is the focus of this Bear Family collection, ballads. (One of his most famous songs is a ballad, a pristine yet haunted version of "Lost Highway" that ranks as one of the most otherworldly sides ever waxed in Nashville.) This is, admittedly, a one-sided portrait of Horton. The Ballads of Johnny Horton misses his first-rate uptempo material like "Honky Tonk Man," focuses almost entirely on B-sides that rarely equaled their better-known flipsides, and oddly, it excludes most of his historical ballads (many of which were hits)...

Honky Tonk Man: The Essential Johnny Horton 1956-1960 (Columbia/Legacy, 1996)

Anthologies are the best way to go with Johnny Horton. In spite of his talents, his discography is inconsistent, featuring as many low points as high ones. For the most part, Honky Tonk Man: The Essential Johnny Horton 1956-1960 does a fine job of separating the wheat from the chaff.

Much of the reason why this singer-guitarist didn't achieve greater stardom, according to country music authority and booklet notes writer Colin Escott, was a lack of "deep-seated commitment" to his music. A drifter from a family of drifters, Horton seemed to view being a musician as just another job that would pay the bills while he pursued more important interests like hunting, fishing, and extrasensory perception. By the early 1950s, he was a professional entertainer with a few releases on Mercury whose biggest claim to fame was marrying Hank Williams' widow. His new manager, Tillman Franks, helped him secure a contract with Columbia in 1955 and had visions of recasting him as a rockabilly. The following year, Horton had his first big hit, "Honky Tonk Man," as well as a few other singles that achieved respectable positions on the country and western charts. 1957 and 1958 were lean years, but his career peaked in 1959 and 1960 with the historically-flavored smashes "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)," "The Battle of New Orleans," "Johnny Reb," "Sink the Bismark," and "North to Alaska." However, this formula eventually started to wear thin, requiring Horton and Franks to come up with another musical reinvention. They never received the opportunity to do so. Not long after allegedly having premonitions of his impending death, Horton was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver on November 5, 1960

This collection's first disc predominantly features material that straddles the line between country and rockabilly, which is evident on the deservedly successful "Honky Tonk Man," "I'm a One Woman Man," "I'm Coming Home," and "The Woman I Need (Honky Tonk Mind)." However, there are also several worthwhile non-hits dating from Horton's first couple of years on Columbia, including songs with a stripped-down sound similar to early Johnny Cash and Johnny Burnette: "Take Me Like I Am," "I Don't Like I Did (Before)," "Hooray for That Little Difference," "She Knows Why," "Goodbye Lonesome (Hello, Baby Doll)," "I'll Do It Every Time," and "Let's Take the Long Way Home." Other tracks display continued musical development, such as the syncopated rhythms on "Lover's Rock," the bass strings guitar solo on the Chuck Berryish "Honky-Tonk Hardwood Floor," and the engaging arrangements on "The Wild One." The concluding four tracks come from a rare album that was recorded in early 1958 and issued exclusively to radio stations. The lame "Hot in the Sugarcane Field" is fake calypso (!), while "Wise to the Ways of a Woman" and "I Love You Baby" are so-so pop songs with hokey backing singers. "Out in New Mexico," on the other hand, is an exceptional western ballad written by Horton that would not have sounded out of place on a Marty Robbins album.

This Bear Family box documents the last four years of Johnny Horton's life as a recording and performing artist. It is the second box set issue in their extensive -- in fact, complete -- Johnny Horton oeuvre. The first documented the Cormac, Abbott, and Mercury recordings as well as two albums' worth of demos and overdubs released while he was alive. This four-CD collection contains Horton's complete issued recordings, unreleased demos, and outtakes as well as overdubbed recordings issued between 1964 and 1969 (during the decade after his death) and working demos. Horton's final period at Columbia is what people (most people) remember. These were the years of "Sink the Bismarck," "Battle of New Orleans," "Honky Tonk Man," "Rock Island Line," "Ole Slewfoot," "The Same Ole Tale the Crow Told Me," his devastating recording of "Lost Highway," as well as his final monster singles recorded in August of 1960 (a mere three months before he was killed in an auto accident), "Go North" and "North to Alaska" (for a soundtrack). Unlike his peers during the later years -- Johnny Cash, Webb Pierce, Faron Young, and others -- Horton exhibited not only an easy amiability but a combination of confidence and vulnerability. It was as if he knew that making music came naturally to him but couldn't understand why anybody would make a big deal out of it. Here are the songs that ran the gamut of rockabilly, hard honky tonk, hillbilly boogie, blues, patriotic songs of the South, cowboy tunes, and even a recording of "Empty Bed Blues," which Bessie Smith had recorded 30 years before. While most Bear Family boxes -- because of their elaborate packaging, liner notes that resemble full critical biographies, and import prices -- are not for everyone, this set is an exception. Rock & roll fans interested in the early music, hardcore honky tonk fans, and of course Horton nuts will have to have this. The earlier set would have even more limited appeal, but the sheer quality of the music issued here transcends its genre, time, and place and is eternal in postwar musical history. This CD was great. I previously loved Randy Travis's deep country voice and this CD was no disappointment. His voice is so soft and melodious and the tracks were, in the main, beautiful. One or two tracks (This Train and Down by the Riverside) did not impress me with their words but all the others left me worshipping God which was what I wanted. If you like Randy Travis you will love this CD.
